Of course, keep in mind that our beta is very early. Things may change, or break, and we haven't finished building all the bells and whistles yet. For example, many of the editing functions aren't available yet, so you can't currently customize the order and selection of videos that show up on your channel (or choose which video is featured). And we'll probably tweak some of the UI as we go.
So why are we showing this before it's finished? Because we want you to be a part of it! If you're here, you probably care about what we build and what your channel looks like, and we want you to be involved along the way.
We'll use this blog to regularly communicate our latest channel beta launches, fixes, and releases - in other words, our release notes. And we'd like to hear your feedback in the comments section.
Why are we releasing new versions of channels in the first place? Well, here are a few reasons:
- A better channel experience for your visitors - folks can browse through and watch your uploads, favorites, and playlists without needing to leave your channel
- Help you enrich your channel - we'll help you customize and design your channel (and the videos on it) without ever leaving the page - and we'll give you some default themes to start with
- A design refresh - yes, our corners are now rounded in many browsers, saving valuable pixels

ReplyDeleteProbably to meet everyone's needs, allow the choice of whether to move on with the new channel setup or to keep the old channel setup, because there are some people, including myself that want the new channel setup, and some people who want to keep the old setup.

2. Fix the bug in "Custom Info" ( Age, Last Sign In, Subscribers) It doesn't update correctly.
I will uncheck "Age" but it will show my age after hitting "Save Changes"
3. PLEASE try to make this one happen haha:
In the Featured section (the first one) shorten the list on the right so that the height of that module is even to the title of the video playing. Which brings me the next point, which is don't show the video description under the Featured Video playing. Just the Title, the Rating, Comments, Views, Share Favorite...etc. Nothing else.
4. This connects to the 3rd one, but make the thumbnails of the videos on the right of the featured video BIGGER. Way too small. So show less of the videos at once, but there is a scrolling option.
5. Im sure many have thought of this, but make the customization drag and drop easy. As far as moving the modules from side to side. and if not that, make it so that you can choose the sides the module is on.
6. Shorten the Recent Activity box, and no scroll on that one. Just like before.
7. Add a background label (color behind the title) to the top of each boxes modules ( Like there is now.)
8. Make it so that you can view your channel without EDITING it. Make it so that you have to click a button like it is now, with "Edit Channel" where subscribe is.
I could see myself getting used to this. It needs much improvement but overall the design is nice. Luckily i'm not to far into my site to just quit with a sudden change like this.

I actually really like it, despite what everyone else says. I love that I don't have to change the screen every time I want to view another video. There are a few problems, but it's not anything that can't be fixed. :)

ReplyDeleteI agree that while the new YouTube looks cool and such I prefer the old YouTube. My reason is that I watch all my favorite youtubers on my iPod touch most of the time buy now since the way the videos are arranged, I can't figure out a way to watch them in order. (for some youtubers I have to go back a few pages to get an inside joke or just because I think their funny). I think a solution to this problem would be to give a choice of how to view YouTube pages. This will make everyone happy.

I really don't like it at all. Now, if you decide to include a customizable "top friends" box, that might be a plus. If you guys do change it, at least give us the option to keep the older layout or switch to the new one as we wish, kinda like myspace did.

How about allowing us to move the modules around on the page as we wish. I see there's no option to show your uploads like we used to up to 9 videos at a time. Just things you might take into consideration.

The new layout seems to be more visual and that is good. Make sure that in the future we can move the layout freely, and so each channel can have different layouts. Some people may wish for updates to be at the top and the feature video at the very bottom etc.

ReplyDeleteI'm tired of the bland old layout that I've been looking at for the past 3 years. This is fresh and new, and now I have more reasons to check out people's channels. Good job Youtube. For people who dont like it, then perhaps a option in the layouts to choose a channel layout?
Someone stated that no one likes the layout. I do. Your opinion doesn't take authority over the rest. I'm sure Youtube will make a compromise.
However, loads of people moaned and moaned non stop about the Facebook layout, but they just accepted it eventually and got used to the layout. Its only a page layout, its not the end of the world.
I do have feedback for Youtube though on this new page layout. I think that the uploads/favourites bar needs to be a lot wider and bigger as it is not always noticeable at first glane. Plus I notice I can't see the video rating in this new sidebar. I would find it easier if the rating was included with the other key video stats.
Again, if that cannot be done, ITS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. Relax people, and stop having tantrums.

ReplyDeleteFirstly, I can't say i hate it. It's pretty smooth design, I like the embed player and Bio box.
Secondly, I wouldn't, as a user, like it if i were personally forced to change over. From what I've read in the comments, you are forcibly changing the layout? I think it would be a better idea to let users choose their layouts, because A.) They would enjoy that freedom and B.) Evidently, no one likes change. Also, the videos do seem kind of hidden, I think 'Uploads' should be the default selection over 'All'.
I hope you've taken the time to recognize certain user's opinions, and thanks for doing your best!

The channel layouts, personally, I find to be ugly. They're boxy and have no personality to them. I'm really not a fan and hope they go through some astheticly pleasing changes before becoming permenant.

@ adrian, this is why they call it a beta channel, it aint finished, like a beta video....
ReplyDeleteYou screwed it up. The video list is too small, doesn't have its own page, clicking on videos opens them on the same page instead of a new one like it's supposed to, and some links don't work correctly. It looks streamlined, but if it doesn't function well, it's worthless. Give us the option to keep the old style or make our own if you do decide to go through with this.

ReplyDeleteWhen I refreshed my browser, I found myself staring at a completely redesigned channel layout. And, in my opinion, I am impressed. Change could either be good or bad, and in this case, it is very good. I like the way you differenciated the channel-owner's personal information by dividing it into sections. This makes it easier to read. You also made the channel's length much smaller by added the scroll-bar on th channele comments section. This saves the channel a lot of dead space created by an overload of comments on a single channel. The sleek design makes it seem more modern and evolved. Once you have all the kinks worked out of it, I have a feeling the redesign will be a very interesting addition to Youtube.

the one thing that kinda bugs me is that when you click a video while on the channel, it gets featured on the channel. That's all fine and stuff,, but as far as i've seen there is no ability to just go to the page of the video itself. which is needed if you want to comment/rate the video.

ReplyDeleteMkay, so I've tried out the new BETA design. It's nice, I must say, but there are ALOT of things that need to be changed. For starters:
ReplyDelete-The subscribe button NEEDS to be BIG and YELLOW!!!!
-If we can watch all of a user's favorites/uploads/playlist videos on one channel, we should be able to comment too, yes? Yes.
-The text has gotta be bigger.
-We need to be able to add some transparency to the new beta layout, like we could in the old one. Our visitors can't see our whole background!!
-The user stats should be at the top. That's what users look for FIRST when they visit a channel.
-I also think the border/background colors should come back. Not just one simple wrapper color.
-The whole layout needs to be more simple and easy to navigate through.
-While I'm at it, I believe YouTube should bring the OLD bulletins back. They were so much fun!
Anyway, those are just a few of the issues I have with this new design. I'm also wondering if YouTube will change everyone's channel when they're done perfecting this design? It should stay a choice, in my opinion.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion its not as bad as people make it to be. Of course the kneejerk reaction is that people wont like it simply because one of our nature as humans is that we dont likes changes. We like to be able to continue our routines with as little hassle as possible.
ReplyDeleteSo the Youtube staff should not be discouraged when they are reading that people said its bad. The amount of people saying "HOW DO I CHANGE TO THE BETA CHANNEL DESIGN?!?!?" should be encouragement enough for Youtube to finish and polish this new design.
Of course no matter how nice the new Youtube channel design is it wont be able to satisfy everyone. There will be some people that prefer the old channel design so my suggestion is that, even after Youtube finish designing the new channel they should allow user to choose which style they want to use. This is of course if its feasible.
My only suggestion at the moment (I've always wondered why Youtube does not do this!!!) is that the user should be allowed another field to categorize their video. Meaning that they should be able to create a genre or type of videos in their own channel. This will make user's channel that like to upload all kinds of videos much neater and tidy.
An example to illustrate my point is this. Take a look at the BBC channel currently all of their videos are mixed into one big heading which is just video that they have uploaded. If Youtube implement my idea of having genre (in BBC's case it could be sport, music, news, entertainment, etc) it will be a whole lot easier to browse through their videos. Currently in order to solve this problem they might have a totally new account called "BBC Sport" to handle all their sport videos. Well I think using my suggestion this wont be necessary and hopefully this could lead to lower cost!
I really do hope Youtube consider my suggestion. Thank you for reading my long comment (if you do read this :D). And lastly good luck with the new channel design.

ReplyDeleteVisually, the whole thing is unappealing in the default state, and rarely (vlogbrothers) ever improved by modification.
Functionality-wise, it has lost large amounts, and if they were implemented later it would simply make the aesthetic even worse.
I actually like it, except for one thing. On one of my videos, I have an annotation at the beginning that says, "good run starts at :50". When I click on that video, it works fine, but when I click on another video, that annotation pops up in the second video too, even though it shouldn't be there. Other than that, I like the new design, except for the fact that the subscribe button isn't yellow.

ReplyDeleteThey could already do this with the "old" channel. Is it really cared for if the person is going to a different page for the channel?
It never bothered me at all.

My page looks quite good to me. It has all I need and it is more minimal than this downgrade.

I honestly don't mind it. I like the overall look of it, with the rounded corners and everything, but i think there are some things that could be changed to make it look better.

The rounded corners.
How you don't have to scroll as much, because everything is closer together.
That you can view the videos in the scrolling box on the side.
That comments are compressed and don't take up the entire page.
That you can select what information you would like to share.
That there is a 'view comments, related videos, and more' button under the currently playing video.
Don't like:
That it makes it harder for rating and commenting.
That the recent activity box takes up most of the page.
That it's a little too confusing... or there's been some features taken off?
These are just the first things i have noticed. I only just switched.
If i think of more, i'll post it.

ReplyDelete* Search! It didn't seem to work when I tried it, which made it more then a little hard to find things since that meant I had to scroll by hand.
* On that, sometime the scrolling got away from me. Maybe it had issues since this is new? but mouse control seemed a bit off, when my mouse is fine on everything else so I take it as the page.......
* Overall though, insanely slick and I can't wait to see it for my page :)

ReplyDeleteI really dislike the new layout. It's nowhere near as simple to navigate as the previous layout. Just leave it as it is, it hardly needs any changing when it is so close to perfection as it is.

ReplyDeleteThis design is absolutely terrible. It looks horrible, and everything is alright now. If the design changes to this, I will most likely spend much less time on my channel, like how I've spent less time on the browse page after it got completely screwed. I don't think there's anything we users can do, because even though everyone seems to be against it, you guys change it anyway. I'd just like to know why you feel the need to change it at all, even though everyone seems just fine with it the way it is.
ReplyDeleteI HATE THE NEW DESIGN Its gonna take away from the open fresh feeling of youtube. Its also gonna take away the sense of community and trying to find new videos and things. One thing I noticed and it really is anoying is that you have made it increasingly harder and now almost impossible to find info like "statistics and data" which can be interesting. I think and hope that youtube will lose many viewers and views and add clicks if they go through with this.

I love the layout. Obviously you'll get complaints because everyone is used to the old layout. I think it has a good design and once people get used to it, they'll like it too. Plus, the old one wasn't really that nice anyway.

Watch all videos in the same page is a great idea, and the browsing is simpler and faster.
- I think user's videos have to be more visible.
- Playlists: Showing 3 videos of a playlist is useless, there is a limit in the number (16) of visible playlists, the scroller go but nothing to see.
- I'm waiting for other customizations I've read are coming, it would be great to change dimensions of frames, as recent activities (I prefer it smaller) and comments (higher, without scroll)
I can't move modules as I see in other beta channels and I don't have the subcribe button at all !! (loggin out obviously)

I don't like it, it's confusing and I was looking at one user and working my way through his videos, now I can see the one video he has at the top and that's it. Nothing will change, I click the buttons and the most I get is a loading circle. (Opera 9.64) Please don't change it to this.

I don't like the new design - why the playlists are pushed away like that?
ReplyDeleteAlso there is no search option. it's not user friendly if someone has over 1,000 videos & if people want to find a specific video.
Overall, the current channel design is okay (apart from Recent Activities which was impremented recently). Keep the option open, don't suddenly change it to the new layout without consulting us users first.

Sorry youtube, but make a different channel template. this one looks ugly. either keep the old one, or make a different one. PLEASE. Why its ugly? with the old template, you could see more. Also, if u keep channel beta 2 anyway, let us pick fonts from our own computer, not ur defaults(Times New Roman, Verdanda, Arial, Georgia, etc.). Finally, KEEP THE OPTION OF TRANSPARENCY LEVEL. Thanx 4 letting me share my opinion.

ReplyDeleteTHAT IS AN IMPERATIVE WHEN I WATCH LONG PLAYLISTS!!!! (I leave the last video I watched in my history so I can return to it later with ease. The way the new channels are set up make this impossible, to my knowledge.)
Other than that, it looks kind of nice. But we really, really don't need a change.
i really like not having to switch pages to watch videos. it makes it a lot more convenient :)
