Hi everybody!
It's Nick again, the engineer. I meant to get this out yesterday in time for Brian's post, but it wasn't quite ready. You can now rearrange the boxes on your channel with little arrows. Up, down, left, right. You choose where to put stuff! There are some restrictions. You can't move the profile box or the big videos box up top. But the rest are mobile. Remember you can add and remove these boxes from the "Modules" tab up top.
Minor detail: you won't be able to see the arrows on a black background. I'll fix that soon, I promise!
Another detail: this is one of the few things that "auto-saves". As in, if you move boxes, no need to hit a save button, it'll save as it moves them.

My videos don't show on my channel page, nor are there any links to my videos. I can get them back when I go to the old channel design, but nothing I've found can get the video module back onto the profile. Can you add a "show or hide video module" to the Modules tab in the channel editor?

ReplyDeleteI love the new profiles but I accidentally stumbled upon a bug to the new arrow features. I moved one of my boxes to the right (cool) and then all the way to the top (oh crud) which pretty much screwed up my profile. Noooooes!

ReplyDeleteArrows work fine. Any reason why the profile box with my name etc doesn't remember the settings after I've saved them? I don't really think I need my age showing, I've changed it not to show (unticked), but the settings never stick.

ReplyDeleteOh yea, at the same time i changed to new channel beta, i feel like "ohh... the classical youtube is gone." but anyway, things gotta change as time past. Looking forward for more updates. =D
And, if possible please add an options for users to move the Edit Channel menu to the bottom or hide it because when i view my own channel, it doesn't look good. Hope the top navigation will be changed soon or later, IMO it doesn't fit the new channel.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the update. Here's a few things I picked up on just now.
ReplyDelete[1] I had a quick look at the "Subscribers" and "Subscriptions" edit function, and tried to change the value from "1" to "2" and "3". After saving the changes & refreshing, it didn't update. Might be a bug there.
[2] When you upload a picture, it displays fine now (good jerb, people). But, when you try to change the background to a different scheme after this, it won't let you keep the previously uploaded picture; it seems to gobble it up. Might want to look into that one, too.
[3] Finally, I just linked my blog to my channel in my accounts section, but I haven't been able to find a way to link to my blog on my user page (ie a special 'blog' link, kind of like the current 'website URL' link). Currently, I'm listing it under the channel URL link, but is there (or will there be) a way to get some kind of separate 'blog' link going?
Thanks for your efforts thus far. Once some more bugs are ironed out, then we can start looking for grander modifications. Remember people, we've signed on to help with the beta; not (just) throw spanners at the poor engineers. Give constructive criticisms/bug reports, or revert back and let people get on with fixing the cutting edge stuff.

thats all fine and dandy, I like the new channels BUT:
ReplyDeleteThe SUBSCRIBE BUTTON CALL TO ACTION is now non existent. It blends with the page instead of sticking out. You need to change that back to what people are used to: YELLOW or go a step further and animate it or something.
This new format is very nice, state of the art and impressive. BUT, do not forget the one simple thing your whole business is based on. THE SUBSCRIBE button.
I feel like the new channel is an impairment instead of an improvement without sufficient SUBSCRIBE call to action.
Using this platform I am sure New Subscribers will only trickle as the user has to search all over looking here and there to try and find a way to subscribe.
I have a good idea, why dont you add a little slider at the end of each vid that prompts the viewer to subscribe. Such as: "Would you like to subscribe to this channel?"
At the very least make the channel button Yellow again.

There doesn't seem to be any logical way to change my channel's featured video, I mean, I could do this when I first joined the BETA and everything was reset, but i've searched around and I just can't find a button or link to change the URL.

Well, I don't have that luck to try this BETA version, but Knight-Nui, where I'm a moderator, had and generally I like the thing, but I've noticed one thing. Embed code is not simple embed code anymore and it doesn't work with HTML module on spaces.live anymore. There's also not the possibility to click on the title of the movie on the channel so you would be able to go directly to that particular video and take the embed code from there (that one works for the record). So it would be much better if you wouldn't change this part of the whole thing. That means the titles of the movies should still serve as the links directly to the particular movie and the embed codes shouldn't be changed anywhere into some "span" versions of it. The work refreshing the other sites with the latest on our channels would be mcuh easier this way.

I think it's great except for the icons in video selection box are way too small. Could you make the icons larger and show the video ratings in the video selection box? Also it would be awesome if you would bring back the transparency option.

ReplyDeleteI like the changes so far, I'm getting used to them quickly, and I think this will give us room to customize our channels even more, so we don't look like copies of each other and recognize channels even more easily. That's great stuff!
However, I don't like how background images work. We have the option to repeat them, so they do not focus in the middle of the channel, under all the modules. But when the emphasis of the image is towards the center (In other words, where the important action/person/place/text/whatever, appears), and the image is somewhat big... There is no focus on anything. The image starts repeating itself from the center of the screen, instead of repeating from one of the edges, and the image is hidden by the modules and the limits of your own screen. I don't know if I'm explaining myself clearly, so I'm sorry if you don't see my point. I use a 1400x900 screen, so that may be the problem, but I'm not sure. I was trying to find some transparency option (I could swear they existed in the old channels) and couldn't find it. In my old channel this image wasn't fully viewable either (that would be impossible) but at least people knew more or less what it was about, and could choose to right-click and view the background. Now all they can see is a lot of navy blue, some flashes and starts and half a little face, lol.
So I suggest that you either put those transparency options back (if they aren't there, maybe I just didn't find them) or give users the options to start repeating their background image from the edges of the screen (though this may not solve problems for BIG background images such as mine), and not from the center. And if you can do both, I will be very grateful.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely great you guys are doing this! Thus far I have found only one problem with the 'Wrapper link color' option. I choose red, for instance, and all the links do turn red except for the 'Subscribe' button which after closing the 'Themes and Colors' tab turns to black...

Another suggestion, can you make a separate "playlists" box, letting you feature the three playlists you want, like in old channels? For the sake of making them more visible and not always showing in the "All Updates" your oldests playlists (at least only the first three appear in this list even if I tick all boxes, people have to manually choose "Playlist" from the top of the channel).

ReplyDeleteThe boxes which before where separated, now being together, make it seem like it's all cluttered.
I THINK THIS IS AN ESSENTIAL MODIFICATION that can make a lot of people accept the new look a lot better, by allowing channels to customize the space between each box as they like.
You make this and I think we can not only qualify this new layout as a CHANGE but, as well, a PROGRESS.
I have no doubt you have tons of requests and suggestions for the beta. And I can imagine you have your own agenda/ideas but please read what we've got to say. There are many posts here which are quite sensible on this issue, others not so much. I trust you will be able to identify them and exploit each to the benefit of YouTube!
As I said before, if I have any more ideas, suggestions or run into any other bugs I'll report them your way.

These new beta channels are awful to me.

I re-uploaded my background image and it appeared as usual, then when I clicked save and closed the advance settings tabs it disappeared.
ReplyDeleteWhen this first came out I had no problems with my BG image but now I can't see it... I'll wait a few minutes to see if it shows up.

Please add the date back in. Hell, even just add it in the tooltips if you want to save space.
But i'm not even sure if the space will matter since the box gets populated as you scroll.

Also making the thumbnails of the videos bigger would be nicer. nice change though!

In a desperate effort to change my featured video by going back and forth between the old profile and the beta, I somehow deleted the big video box from my profile entirely, and as far as I can tell, there's no way to get it back. I was just wondering if you could fix this?

ReplyDelete1 with the search box when you are on your beta page, when you put something in that you want to search on youtube it wont work at all.
2 today I was on my beta page and I noticed that the country has been changed and then when I go to change it back to USA, the United States of America isnt there.

I'm liking this pretty much, although some things could be improved. I think the spot that says your username at the top shold be bigger and bolder, you kinda have to look for it. The subscriber number should be more noticable as well, since that's what everyone cares about.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, I like the moveable boxes, the giant video thing, and the scrolling stuff. I think you should have the option to have your videos in a seperate box thing like before though.
Also, I hate how when you click on a video on your channel, it plays in the featured video box, instead of taking you to the video. Taking you to the video maked it easier to comment, without having to watch the video and going to the main page with that video so you can comment. We need more comments anyways, the featured video hinders that, as well as the number of favorites, seeing honors, sharing, etc.

I like the new layout. Good work from the engineers. But since I have switched I have recieved very litle response from my vids, i.e. comments, ratings, subsribers, compared to having the old layout. I do think that its a problem that the ratings and comments is not possible from the channel page. Also I would like to be able to see how many ratings and favorites my vids have recieved, from one location, instead of going through my vids to see that.
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention that the automatic "next vid" feature, when watching videos from the new layout, makes is harder to place comments and ratings on the new layout. Also I think I found a bug, when clicking next on my subscribers page, the window is moving around and changing location.

I'm checking this update on some user's channel and I can't sort their videos by Most Viewed or Most Discussed. Neither can't I see the rating below the view counts. I think this takes a lot more from channels than it gives.

i really like this new channels layout, however i used the sort by most viewed/discussed feature frequently and would really like if that option was available on the new version (maybe it is and i dont see it)

I tried the new design, and like it a lot.
ReplyDeleteFor the time being, I have reverted to the old format. My main quibble is that the new design makes it more difficult for channel visitors to navigate my videos. I think ease of access to the videos should be THE primary consideration in any re-design.
Being able to move the boxes around is nice, but it can end up giving too much prominence to Subscriptions, Subscribers or Friends lists, at the expense of the Uploaded and Favorite videos, which is what most visitors want to see.

ReplyDeleteMy only quibble is that it makes it alot harder to see when the videos were posted and for someone like me who watches blogs and likes to find new people to watch, its hard to backdate and see what has been going on.
If the date of the videos were on, or they were always listed in chronological order it would make it alot easier!!!
Elli21486, don't do it! This is exactly what I did and it made the video module disappear without a way to make it come back.

ReplyDeleteAnd that "auto-save" thing? Bad idea. LOTS of people are complaining because they messed up their channel and now there's no way to change it back. You should be able to PREVIEW your channel when you move your boxes and THEN save it.

Elli21486: there is no way to change featured video using the new look, you've got to use the old one. Thing is, I did that, then went back to the new look. The video module never showed up again. Now it's gone forever it seems, and switching back and forth, changing videos, settings, whatever, doesn't work.

ReplyDelete1.I think (like the others have said) that we need some kind of editable 'Subscribe Button'. I was thinking maybe a list of desings for it or maybe even upload a button? And to change the name E.G. Subscribe to 'Please Click >'.
2. I cannot change my featured video on my youtube page. Whatever I do doesn't work. I try reverting back to the old youtube design then going back to the beta, but no.
