Also, have you noticed the "our new favorite channel designs" box on the right hand side? We're using that to keep track of some of some of the best channel designs we've spotted. Here are a few:
- IceflowStudios' Channel - A great light blue theme (with some nice color contrasts) to go with an "icy" name
- vlogbrothers' Channel - Love the lighter color scheme and the alternate font. If only you moved your modules around to fill in the large gap in the lower right. (Oh, right...you can't yet. We should probably build that piece soon!)
- mnathanielc's Channel - A darker theme with a great matching background that works very well - and a good use of switching the right hand side of the screen to show "Uploads" by default

I'm sorry you guys but you shouldn't change things that don't have a problem in the first place. I really don't like the new beta channel design and I think you should stop ignoring peoples' complaints about it. Listen to US youtubers who actually use youtube. Try to be more sensitive to our needs and stop ignoring our complaints. If WE youtubers don't want a new youtube beta change then you SHOULD listen. ReplyDeleteI think you should leave it as an option. I frankly like the new layout, but many people don't. More options are better for a website like this.
Speaking of more options, is there ever a plan to extend the font selection? I understand that you're using universal fonts. I guess what I'm saying is that there are more than 5 universal fonts. There's Tahoma, Trebuchet, Segoe, etc.

ReplyDeleteI really hate how when you edit your channel info, when you click on the area to edit, it turns into a tiny text field in which you have to scroll all the way. This is really annoying and really unnecessary. Why can't you just click on the area you want to edit and keep it the way it is? Why do you have to shrink it to a very tiny text box and make it extremely hard for us to change our channel?
Why can't you change your channel icon?
We need the old bulletins back! The new ones are VERY suckish! And no one posts any of them anyway! Take out that 'Recent Activity' trash and bring back the bulletins and the recently watched videos!
And seriously, although many people have already said this, PLEASE BRING BACK THE YELLOW SUBSCRIBE BUTTON!!! The new one's VERY boring and no one ill want to subscribe! Or even better, let us customize our subscribe buttons! That would be so great! =D

ReplyDeletei don't like it. i would never want to have my channel setup this way because i only want my videos, vid log, favs, friends, info 'bout me, and my subscribers visible. i don't want to promote other videos with a "related" tab attached to my channel. that would be steering people away from my videos, and towards others. people don't click on a channel to watch videos that are completely NOT mine in any way. they click to watch mine, and/or what i'm interesed in.
that's why channels were created in the first place. so that people can see youtube from the creator's point of view.
First of all I'd like to say that I do love how everything looks. Just a few tweeks that I'd like to have.

1. Of course I'd like the transparency so you can see the background better. Its makes everything so much nicer.
2. The subscribe button needs to be seen better. Which is why I want it back to yellow :3
3. When you edit the information you get a very veeeeery tiny spot to write on. Why can't I see everything at once?
4. I need to be able to move the modules where I want them to be. Even between the upper and the lower places. So, if I'd like my info to be where the scroll with all my videos are.
5. The name of the profile needs to be bigger so it can be "remembered" more or at least seen.
6. The "medals" and "awards" you've earned needs to be seen. I can see them on the old one but not the new one.
7. In the scrollbox where the videos are you should be able to decide the order. Like if I want "this" playlist to be over my uploaded videos and so on.
8. IMPORTANT!!!
If you take away, let's say the friends module, it doesn't go back if you click you want it back. I actually took away my comment, friends, subscribes and subscription modules and now I can't get them back on the new channel if I revert back they're there again. I like the new one so I want to use it but I can't.
Things I like and should stay:
1. The scrolling comment box. I like that it doesn't take up such huge space but a limited space. Great idea.
2. The look of the channel. The design!

Without a doubt the nicest channel I have found so far.
I don't like it. Although a fixed background is good (and should be optional) and the organization below is nice... the scroll bar at top is unnecessary and compacts things too tightly.
ReplyDeleteThe new design is... well, to be frank... undesirable. I find all the modules sort off mush together and it's hard to tell things apart. Personally, I think the current design is better. Every thing can be clearly seen and distinguished. The new one is just odd. While I respect your choice if you institute this new design, I would like to remind you that things tend to break on the quest to fix what isn't broken.

I have a problem from way back when you guy first started changing everything... Info that I added a long time ago through the edit channel button is stuck there.. Because now you go to account and change it there the stuff that was previously there cannot be deleted. It says "check channel description". Also in my inbox when i get a new message or comment and then I read it it keeps it as a new message not a read one... Yep... Thta's about it... By the way new channel design id okay, but I still like the old one better... The new one is too crammed, the old one is more spaced out.

ReplyDelete1) Background image should have an option that lets u stretch image to the size of the page.
2) Subscribe button should have its own colour code box so text on the page isnt the same as the subscribe button. I think it should also have a option to have the old subscribe button or an option that gives u a few diffrent subscribe buttons to use.
3) Backgrounds under 1mb or 500kb should be aloud to be used.
4) friends box should have an option to let u just click accross and go through all your friends one by one instead of having to click see all and wait for the new page to load all the friends.

Backgrounds are NOT fixed. I'm still having the exact same problem: I'll upload a background, and it'll work fine at first. I'll save it, and it still appears to work fine. The moment I close the theme settings or reload my page, the background vanishes.

I'm loving the BETA channel design now that everything is coming together (although I'm still missing my honours). Here are my two channels:

The only suggestions I can really make now are the following little things:
The ability to change the size of the comments and recent activity boxes
A video length to be displayed alongside their name whilst scrolling
Be able to watch a featured video in full screen and show videos that aren't normally supposed to be embedded on other sites than YouTube
The ability to hide certain videos from showing up in the "uploads" section (for people creating YouTube annotation games and whatnot)
The ability to scroll through the whole description box of the featured video
And here are a few, less probable ideas that might make the new experience a bit better:
New modules showing only honours, other websites a user is on (ie, links to twitter and blogger)
The ability to see when the user is online and what they're watching now
The ability to scroll through all friends and subscribers in the same window, and possibly see when they are online with a little "online now" icon in the corner of their picture?

ReplyDeleteThe Channel description is not gone, if you had entered any for the old design, but you are now unable to make changes to it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the channel description was the only place on the channel homepage where you were able to post additional links (plain) to relevant pages. Those URLs are now no links anymore in the new design. I use it to reference to other YouTube channels or to a file share, where people can download my videos in AVI or WMV format, because YouTube still does not offer this optional feature to download the video in original format (although I know that you keep those. You can see this remark as another suggestion hehe).
It was nice to have something like that, but more important is to make up your mind, if you want to include the feature in the new design or not. If you do, provide the option to update it, if you don't, remove it from the channel homepage.
Where is the search box to only search the videos of the user? I have a channel with over 300 videos. I often refer to this search option, if somebody asks for a specific video and I also use it myself (in addition to the search in my account) to find my own stuff. You have rather way too few options to search for stuff (something you wouldn't expect from a search company), so removing any search option that you have is a bad idea to begin with.
I know that you are working for the front end team, but I have some comments for the backend as well.
One thing that I just encountered today again, is the missing feature in the "edit video" detail page to see the play lists where the video is attached to and the option to remove it from any of them or to add it to different ones.
I also happened to blog about some of the annoyances that I notice time and again as somebody who uses your site pretty much daily.
I won't repeat everything here. I hope that your blog does not swallow links like the video comments on YouTube itself :)

Setting the "Do not display age" has no effect. You should really change the priority of this defect (probably a P3 now) to P2, as this is a privacy issue. Also, why aren't you guys using a bug tracking system externally for the beta testers, something simple, like JIRA, instead of this cumbersome commenting system? ReplyDeleteI'd quite like to see the oppertunity to change the player size (4:3 or 16:9) because it get's annoying seeing the bars. Also partners using the new layout don't have that option which I would imagine gets quite annoying.
ReplyDeleteAlso, transparency settings would be nice because we've lost them.
Also maybe something like the iGoogle themes - a list of different designs that you can use on your channel. That way, it would liven up the pages a bit and make them more attractive.
I'd also like to be able to put my Twitter and DailyBooth feeds on the channel too. Everyone seems to have them now-a-days and it'd be nice to see what their activity on their channels, rather than having to go over to the seperate site.
I've heard there were some issues with the new channels before. But it looks fixed and I'm using the new channel now. Awesome job, I like it unlike most people. new fresh, organized.

ReplyDeleteI really like the new profiles, one question which I'm sure you've answered a hundred times. Will you be able to have transparent modules to see your background easier? And I've noticed some channels have a kind of bar across the top of the page with some info and a name? I was wondering if everyone could make one or just certain YouTubers (like do you have to have a big time channel and have ads and things like that haha). Thanks for giving us the opportunity to work out the kinks.

I like new view of channels, it is quite original and nice.
ReplyDeleteBut I have noticed one defect: in russian language the wrapper text (right under the video on the channel) is shown not well enough, some part of the text is hidden. I hope you will fix it soon.
Also, I hope you will do something with this annoying deleting comments system, so we can delete OUR comments to OTHER videos, not just hide it.

The new channels are great. but. You should leave it as a decision. I hate the new channels. They make my icon smaller. and If I can't suscribe to myself why would i want to see the suscribe button? Listen, YouTube, if you're gonna keep your page in play for longer than 3-5 years after this, you'd better start getting up off your lazy asses and start listening to the community's complaints! Why don't you just go restore things to how they were around 3 years ago! And fix that "false flagging" problem you have out there. Like, make it so people can't just randomly flag a video for no reason. And what's with the stringent copyright issues? You just go around flagging vids even if they have ONLY 5 seconds of music or certain images! Seriously, YouTube, stop. Just stop. Stop being so afraid that you'll be sued for people putting short clips of music or using images that they didn't even claim copyright over! ugh! So YouTube, stop being such babies and bitches and fix all the problems you ALREADY have and stop worrying about aesthetics! Not everyone cares about a fancy, shiny, bubbly new look! we just want something that works and just works.

Who other than a Business or Pop Artist, NBC etc or people with Aspergers that enjoy things as emotionless as possible wants Cold Square and Rectangle BOXES packed in and bunched up on a page? Publish YOURSELF? HOW? What were you thinking?
You stripped Millions of their personal expression, you pulled the rug from under them and closed in the Cold Boxed Walls.
Any wonder people feel betrayed and used? You stripped them of All that You claimed to be!
Now they think you just want to jam pack videos on a page to make money. That leads to rebellion! Strip someone (instead of their Design it is YOUR Generic COLD BOXES), Use someone and then say 'Sorry, this is the way WE design it' and you have a big big problem!
You gave the people something, they made you famous now you take it from them? Your not biting the hand that fed you, it's more like sticking people in the heart. Listen to the people! When people are THAT Angry they have either been hurt or they fear. You guys did both. People put their personality in their DESIGN on their pages it became PART OF THEM.
They wanted to visit this little place of their own and venture out from their comfortable channels and explore the world through your videos. Like sitting in your favorite chain watching TV with your remote in hand. Safe and Comfortable, feeling secure people can expand out and explore the world. Do you not know people feel 'at home' on their channels? They deigned it to feel that way. THAT Comfort Zone keeps them there relaxed viewing more & more videos.
I spent an hour on Daily Motion, it was like going over your great Aunts that is so set in her ways you don't know where to sit! I came back to YouTube and said Ahhh! theres no place like home!
People fear you are taking away their big comfy chairs they worked to get just right and will go ahead and change it anyway; knowing Millions are happy with YouTube format now and that hits below the belt.
When people Twitter and Facebook are getting in on a revolt against YouTube and now Google You KNOW IT MUST BE BAD!!!!

This new channel layout seems interesting but its not really for me. I want to have the old channel layout but it doesnt let me go back. When i click the "Revert back to old channel" it doesnt take me back to the old one, and im getting a little frustrated. What do i do?

We really don't like the new channel beta 2.0 thing. How can we revert to the old channel looking background??
ReplyDeleteThey're all made out of ticky-tacky and they all look just the same. Especially annoying is the arrow shape at the top that points right. How utterly boring on channel after channel after channel. I was just on a channel (old verson) that is exquisite and will be totally ruined by the upgrade - no way to duplicate the effect the new opaque boxy boxy boxy boxes. YOU MIGHT BE ON TO SOMETHING IF YOU ALLOWED INDIVIDUAL BACKGROUND IMAGES IN EACH OF THE BOXY BOXY BOXES.

I completely agree with keone. What is the point of changing it to a format that so many people are complaining about when it was perfectly fine in the first place?? I really don't want to be forced to change my channel to the annoying new layout. Please leave it as an option!
