Hi everybody!
I'm Nick, your friendly engineer. I heard there were some bugs with the new channels. Michael and I pulled out some bug spray this morning and got the ones that were right in front of us. Sadly, we haven't quite killed them all yet.
Well, for now, we slipped the commas (or language-relevant separators) into the view counts on the videos. Sorry we forgot that the first time round! Also, IE users should be a touch happier now. We tried to clean up some visual issues there.
As I said, there are still a bunch of bugs to squash, so be patient with us. This whole public beta thing is a bit new for us, and so far I'm happy with how it's turning out. We're going to take your opinions into account as we tinker with this, and it'll turn out better with your help. A few of y'all might have noticed the super seekrit opt-in URL wasn't working for a couple minutes. Well, it's working now! If only you know the seekrit. :-P
Anyway, they're letting us engineers out of our cages to post here on the blog, so expect more from me and Michael (the other engineer) in the future.

Update: the whole "can't revert" thing was unintentional, I promise. SuperLuigi and Muddytrails, I reverted your channels by hand. It looks like a logic error in the code on my part; people who somehow hit the migrate function twice (maybe browser error?) lose the ability to unmigrate. I'll fix the logic for the future, and attempt to find all the other broken accounts.

One big problem: When I watch a video that has annotations, and then watch another video, the old video's annotations show up in the current video I'm watching. Seriously weird and annoying, and can ruin the experience for many. Help?

ReplyDeleteAnother thing that I would VERY much like is to have when you click on 'Uploads' or 'Favourites' or 'Playlists', and the list of all of them comes up, I wish in the header it would have the amount of Favourites, Videos or Playlists in brackets like it used to. Not a major change to be honest, but it is major to me...
How do you change the featured video on the new page? The one that displayed is two videos old. My original was set to let me enter the code and now selecting "Account / Edit Channel" takes me to the page itself. Thanks!

I dont like the fact that when viewing all uploaded videos, it shows all of them in one massive list. This makes it very difficult to locate videos when viewing them in upload order, not by title. Also with videos of similar titles it makes it easier to mix them up, as there is no clear way of telling wether you're at video 100, or 1000. The pages were good, as with 20 videos per page you could easily get to where you wanted if you knew roughly the number of first video on page.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the 'add to quicklist' option does not seem to be available, i dont know wether this has just not been implemented yet, but i think it should be. These have been my main issues with youtube beta at the moment. Other than those points, all seems to be fine.
Also, one cannot seem to scroll though the videos with the use of a scroll wheel, it will always automatically scroll the whole page instead. I would like it if, once the scroll bar has been used, the scroll wheel will be effective in that area. thankyou

ReplyDeletegood_intentions has a point with the descriptions issue. I noticed the exact same problem with the featured video on my channel. The description for it is extremely wordy, and hence the bottom bit of it is clipped. You guys either need to expand the amount of space provided for video descriptions, add a scrollbar or make the text scroll up and down.

Wrapper colour for profile would be good if you could get transparent colours if you know hwat i mean, so that you can still see the background image.

ReplyDelete1. The "Send Message" button.
2. Customize the "Subscribe" button color or make it default yellow.
3. Move the modules around.
4. Make the whole description visible or "See More".
5. Leave a comment/rating directly from the channel.
With these fixes I think many will be pleased.

Hi, I switched to the beta last night and decided to revert, but everytime I try to downgrade the only thing that happens is my profile switches to a different theme. Is this a known bug and if so, do you know how I can change back?

ReplyDeleteI wasnt able to update the video embedded into my channel in the beta. Hopefully you add that to the channel editor soon. It is a pretty big part of promoting your videos or videos of your friends/inspirations.

I noticed while watching videos on someone profile in the new set up that while it will show you the average rating for the video, it won't let you click on the stars and rate it yourself. I don't knbow if that is intentional or if that is just me, but it would be nice if you could I think.

ReplyDeleteIs commenting on Video's... I really think people are going to get lazy and stop commenting on users video's. My reasoning is because you can choose video's from the main page, and it just switching the featured video on your page to the one you want to watch, So people won't make comments because they won't be bothered finding the small link under the video featured to go to the actually page were the video is. Do you follow?
Basically changing video's on the main page and watching them without having to go to a different page is great, but their should really be a comment box on the main page under each video you choose to watch on the main page. So that people can view and put a comment without having to find a link to the channel (which is a small link... For some reason the video title isn't a link to the actually page the video is stationed at)

ReplyDeleteThe view count keeps freezing up around 300. Are you going to do anything about this because I had to dlete 3 of my videos for this and 3 of my videos just unfroze. One was frozen for over 2 weeks. My insight says I got a lot of views but the view count didn't give me them.
ReplyDeleteThere seems to not be a way to directly access the comments on the video you are watching. I liked on the view comments tab and it brought me to the latest video instead of the video I was actually watching.

ReplyDeletethe colours and themes does something weird when i try to open the drop down box to edit my channel, a portion of the advanced options for backgrounds is blocked by the background colour itself, so i can't edit my colours. oh and please add some transparency too? it'll be better to show of our own backgrounds a little more, the solid colours look a little clumsy at the moment.

When in "player veiw" the search box is automaticly set to "sear channel" :( head recking stuff.
Also, I need something clarified real quick, will we be able to use the featured video section of our page to watch a video and the side menu on the right to search another without acctually leaving the page? If so, its a brilliant idea. Just remember to add a popdown comment box at the bottom or somthing.
Is this feature already in the beta or what, becuase i can't seem to figure out how to work it :(

ReplyDeleteHey again man, Another problem for me, When in player veiw the videos lag pretty bad, i can't seem to point out whats causing it, even when the video is fully buffered. The sound always stays on track but it never goes out of sync with the video, just a lot of lagging!! I hope this is fixed becuase its really frustrating. plus the anotations mess up in player veiw sometimes. thought ya'll should know.

ReplyDeleteOne thing I've noticed is in the new edit profile menu, it seems counter intuitive to have the Checked boxes be the items that are NOT visible and the unchecked items be the visible ones.
ReplyDeleteSeems like it should be the other way around, anything you want to show is checked, anything you want to hid lacks the check mark.
There is definite issues with annotations, sometimes they don't show, sometimes they show the previous videos annotations, etc. As a heavy user of the annotation system I'd like to see this rectified soon.
The "Featured Content Set" option do not work at all, it always reverts to "All My Stuff" which for my alternate channel is bad because I really only want people to see ONE playlist, everything else on the channel I use for internal testing and would rather not feature on the channel page, but also don't want to private because I need limited subscriber feedback on occasion.
I echo others when I say that the ability to rate/comment from the channel page should be a priority in this stage of design, before all the transparency and bells and whistles we need basic user interactions reestablished with our videos before anyone can begin to stop griping.
That being said I'd still like to see the modules be mobile, the videos be able to pop out (the title being hard-linked is a great solution to this) I'd like to see ratings on the videos in the side scroll bar, or maybe an option to choose whether ratings or view counts show there.
I still think the subscribe button should go back to yellow, or at the very least give us the option to change the color scheme as many others have already said.
As far as end user experience I do think the videos should load into pages for those people like Nalts and others that have 600+ videos waiting for them to load, even on a faster connection takes a long while. For collab channels that link the members of the collab in the info box, all those links seem to be disabled, which limits traffic to individual YouTubers that we may be interested in.
All in all I think this design is a great step forward, and will be very cool when all these kinks get worked out, great job guys, keep up the good work...... or else *bwahahahahahaha*

I like the new look, but there are some things I think need to change before this beta gets complete!
ReplyDelete1. I don't like how the videos only seem to play INSIDE the channel. I don't like that one bit. I think that clicking the link to videos needs to send you to the video page with all the comments. I think it would badly hurt YouTube if this does not change.
2. I don't like how the videos get displayed in one long list. I think there needs to be a separation mark. Like maybe separate videos with a line by month. Maybe give us an option of doing it by month, day, or year. That would improve the organization of the look.
3. I think the subscribe button is WAY too small! Please make it bigger! I do not think it is noticeable enough to the average user! And make it yellow again. Yellow was awesome. And make it show up for people who aren't logged in/don't have accounts. It will give some people an incentive to join if they see the subscribe button on a channel they like.
How do I change the home page video in Beta Mode. There is no option yet like there was.

ReplyDeleteI love the new beta-channels, but there are a 10 things that I miss, or would liked to see improved:
1 "the connect to user" box. Users with the 2.0 channel interface can not be invited as friends, or being sent PM's with a link from the page. Also, blocking users has become more difficult.
2 user/techfuse or ChrisTheFeral's idea is pretty good. Multiple accounts can be managed more easily that way.
3 on the front page of my channel, under the all, uploads, playlists, and favorites tab, I miss how many videos I've uploaded. It was handy to see that large 7, but now I can't see it any more. This should also be for my favorites under all, where I miss that big 426. To ways of fixing this problem: under the All tab: say Uploads (7) Favorites (426) Playlist 1 (3) Playlist 2 (2) playlist 3 (200).
or All-Uploads (7)-favorites (426)-playlists (4).
4 I really miss the ratings! If you have a good video on your channel, the stars will get your attention! also, i miss the number of comments on my videos in the channel.
5 We should be able to give our subscribe button a custom colour or texture, independent from the theme. This would give it a even more "custom channel" look. Also, it should be a bit bigger.
6 There should be an option to close the edit bars, and re-open them. A small button would be enough.
7 when your watching a video under the all-tab, and if you have a long description,it does only show a very small part of the discription.
8 also, under the all tab, the "favorite" and "flag" options are pretty useless. Most of the times, when you are watching from your favorites, you won't favorite it again. Also, when you're watching your own videos, you're most likely not going to favorite them. And the flag option is useless because: you are not going to flag your own video or a video you like. But there should be an option to rate and leave a comment directly from the channel.
9 there should be a transparacy option for all your boxes, so you can see the background better. But this should only be in effect on boxes, not on videos.
10 last but not least, the boxes should be allowed to be moved arround in the edit tab.
This was pretty much everything i wanted to say, I hope the updated channels will be awesome, I hope this idea will help and I'm really looking forward to it!

I dont hate the new channels, but I dont love them either. I think if the user icons were a bit bigger on Comments and the Title Bar, that might help, and instead of scrolling to see all the comments and recent activity, just make them longer. Or, there could be an option, like a check-box for "Scroll Bar". Also, I would really like it if the text and subscribe (make it yellow and more visible!) were bigger, and dont like how the videos are now organized on the Top Part of the page (next to the featured video) their icons should be bigger. I also think that Top Part of the page should have it's own separate color options than the "Wrapper color" (But I think the Title Bar should either have it's own options or keep the Wrapper Color). And where's the search field :D? Finally, it would be cool if the user could resize or move around the Modules, and take some limits away from the Channel Description (such as put back the clickable URLs, re-enable HTML, and put Influences/Similar to on,in my case, Director Profiles. Otherwise, why is it there to us :D? The last thing is

Ok, sorry about all of that, just trying give my opinion! I do have several glitches to report, however. The font is a bit off, [beta] channels load much slower, and when I double-click on an already customized "Theme", the font resets to "Times New Roman". These channels go very slowly. There were several other bugs I saw, but I forgot!

It would also be nice there could be a way to see comments without having to change pages. After all that's a big part of Youtube and if you get rid of that, this might as well be hulutube.

ReplyDeleteI've now been using the new beta profile for about two days now, and I'm not as pleased as I used to be. A few more things I'd like to point out:
1. The Comments Section, I am NOT happy with the need of scrolling down. The whole point of have such an amount of comments displayed is so you can see them all and I can't. You need to fix this.
2. Featured Video, I should be able to choose whatever video I want to be featured and I cant, sort that out please.
3. You have to have seperate module boxes for Playlists, Favourites and Uploads. I don't like those little microscopical things at the side; its terrible. FIX IT
4. And once again, i mentioning this again, because I want them back on the beta version. The playlist video boxes. I want them playlist video boxes on my beta channel, but you didn't give me that option. Please fix that. If your not sure what on earth I'm talking about, have a look at BenLoca's channel page. You will notice under his "videos" section, he has two little video boxes, this is the playlist video box section, I want this on beta.
5. As computernerd01 said, "The Subscribe button needs to be yellow" (or at least orange).
6. The background image uploads need to be accepting bigger images as I said before.
7. In the channel description box, it should be allowing people to click on url websites as links; as sometimes the website is never enough. A lot of YouTubers use Twitter, Facebook, MySpace etc, and I expect my subscribers to be able to link to these sites directly from my page. If it is a case of you informing a policy of no free advertising, so be it.
8. And you already know about the contact module simply not being there. When prevents people from sending my personal messages, and friend requests. You need to sort it out YouTube.
9. People need to move all the modules wherever the want them to be.

ReplyDeleteThe new layout isn't that great tbh. I wouldn't pick it over the old layout, it looks cluttered and messy. All the videos for example are stuffed into a corner of the screen. I don't like that. Shouldn't videos be the centre of attention? The comments are what should be in the corner. Tbh, I'd rather see them improve the existing layout, introduce new themes and features etc. than change it to this.

Partners get a huge banner at the top of their page, which makes it look so much better. So why not at least let us upload a custom logo, to replace the display picture and channel name in the top bar. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! This would be great for the rest of us non-partners!

An issue I found it that the initial (featured) video on my channel page doesn't display in HD or HQ when my channel page is first loaded, but if I click on it or any other video in the menu on the right, they display in HD/HQ. This should be fixed.

It's alriiiight but honestly the backrounds r kinda a issue for me....I mean like if u dont have it the perfect size you cant see it or you only see half...I think you need to make it where you can do the transparency level thing (idk if thats spelled right) cuz then I could see my backround plz post this :)
ReplyDeleteI only have one complaint so far. Why aren't the URL's in the channel description hotlinks? I want people to be able to click them, if they have to copy/paste, the probably won't bother.

I also want this when we see the "uploads" (change the names to videos) Bigger thumbnails, Ratings, How long the video is, Views, and WHEN it was uploaded. Not when we click on it, but like the old way. and PLEASE make an option for the old channel, at all times. even when this isn't beta. thx
ReplyDeleteI agree with Spritemoney and Eric Leamen about the uploads/videos thing: many beginner users of viewers would be asking me where are my videos and they can only see "uploads", and they wouldn't know what uploads mean. I think having it called "Videos" is better ;) I also think that having videos on the profile not link to the actual video but just play on the profile can be neat, but isn't handy when I'm trying to attract people to comment my videos. Would be great to either have an option to make the previews link off to the video url or profile player, or have some big text saying "comment here". Cheers

ReplyDeleteby the way, I had some trouble on the new profile beta disabling my country. Having the country section unchecked, still publicly showed Afganistan (for some reason) as my country on my profile. Keep up the great work

I just switched to the new beta version and am taking it for a spin for maybe a week or so. I have one small complaint though at first site. I use my Youtube channel to link to other websites, such as Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter. In the old format, they would become hypertext and clickable to the other websites. However, in the new format, they become just text. Like I said, this was small, but can you make those text into hypertext again?

ReplyDeleteI have a few irks with the new profile page. There is some way to view the 'Most Viewed' videos? I don't know the name of most videos I like but I know they're in the person's top most viewed viedeos.
ReplyDeleteAlso, when you go to 'Uploads' on the profile page, why is the audio of the front video still playing? It gets annoying because I'm sure most people are listening to music while on the computer and the background video audio is playing (and you cant turn it off from that page). I know you can turn it off by going on the front page but it gets really tedious doing this for every profile.
I know you have a lot to fix, so keep up the good work!
P.S. Are there tabs (Movies, TV, Music, Videos) at the top of the page like most people said there would be? Or do only Americans get that?
When on a profile of someone, and want to do a general search (at the top of the page, for all of youtube search), you hit search, and are always just redirected to the page that you are on... ;)

Here's another possible minor glitch:
ReplyDeleteWhen viewing a 2.0 Channel with an extremely long main video title in Safari, the "Share Favorite Playlists Flag" and "View comments, related videos, and more" sections are not contained within the wrapper area and goes beyond the bottom of it. Apparently, the Ratings box is forced one line down in Safari, which subsequently causes the two offending sections to be forced off the bottom of the wrapper.

Also when you click on the video, make it go to the VIDEO PAGE! I really hate that feature. Also bring back URL uploads for backgrounds. You reserved this feature for partners, please just bring it back. If you asked people on youtube right now, if they'd want it back, they'd say yes. Maybe not the really new ones, because they didn't know how it worked, and never experienced it. But come on, just bring it back!

The annotations from the other video are in the next video you watch.

I had another glitch. I tried to leave a comment on a video, and it said "Remaining character count: 2", but when I clicked "Post Comment", it said "Your comment must be shorter than 500 characters". I had 2 left!

I think regular members should have the ability to add banners to their page rather then just reserving that for partners. That would be exciting.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Olar, partners deserve privileges! And that's coming from someone who isn't a partner! I'm not a fan of the new design, well, I prefer the old one. I like the option of choosing either, as it seems to work for people. One thing I would suggest is having collab videos "hosted" by the channels involved if you get what I mean. So the video is on everyone in the videos channels, unless it was of course edited and everything by the person that made it.

I dont know if it's just me, but the "Share Favorite Playlists Flag View comments, related videos, and more" text on the featured video is UNDER the channel description module! Also, the featured video's name needs to be a hyperlink to watch it on it's regular page. Also, could the video description be scrollable? Sorry if I'm asking for too much!
And where'd the "Guru, Reporter, etc" and their "style" labels go? And the subscribe button should be yellow! And unless I'm not seeing it, how do you like up other accounts to you (when you click the subscribe button, you see the list) or is that just for partners? I do think that part should go with the CHRISTHEFERALS IDEA.
Modules should be resizeable and moveable, and bring back the "Videos | Favorites | Playlists | Groups | Friends | Subscribers | Subscriptions" bar.
And can you re-enable html and put streams in channels like they were before "the changes"?

ReplyDeleteOK, I did say I was going to take this Beta version for a spin and came up with one glitch and one problem.
ReplyDeleteFirst the glitch. It seems that the new layout will automatically insert a spaceevery 30 characters in a row that are not separated by space. I don't believe there are words that are over 30 characters but it will cause some grief with URLs. Take one of my links, http://www.myspace.com/elli21486. It will appear as http://www.myspace.com/elli214 86. Since this is no longer a clickable link, viewers will either write in the browser or most likely, copy and paste. If they do copy and paste, they will most like get the usual "File not found" or something like that.
Second is a problem for all those who want custom backgrounds. According to the specs, the file must be under 256K. I did do that with a file that is roughly 218K. However, the problem came when it was uploading. Instead of going through, it gave me, and I don't know if I'm the only one, a "500 Internal Server Error." I will try again later but this is a problem that needs to be fixed.

How do you get the layout and can you move the stuff around instead of HAVING to have your videos at the top and your description at the bottom. (also some things people have in their descriptions like the big fancy SUBSCRIBE might get messed up by the info not being down the side.

I am like a kid in a candy store. This is cool! I think the new backgrounds are very professional. I would love it in the future if the big empty background box, at the bottom left could fill up with the uploaded image. Maybe even being able to add shadows to text or more outer borders. Oh, possibly more color options. Ok, you guys are doing great.

And another thing i noticed is alot of the people that are trying to subscribe to me are saying i cant find the subscribe button and i understand why since its not yellow anymore.
I think you guys should add a feature which lets you choose what color you want your subscribe button to be. Like yellow,red,or green etc... But you get it. I think that would be really nice or just make the subscribe button bigger or more noticeable some how.

I do like this new layout. HOWEVER, you need to fix the annotation problem where the previous video you were watching's annotations show up on the video you are currently watching. This is annoying. ALSO, we should be able to move the parts of the channel around. AND one last thing, there is no need for a scroll bar on the comment box, as there is a ton of space below it. ALSO PLEASE BRING BACK BULLETINS!!

The area where our 'information' is given is WAYY to split up. Remove the horizontal bar the separates things from Name to Website. From there allow the same horizontal bars that you have.

A problem i found is that thier is not search videos for favorite and the person video. How am i going to find a video in a channel with thousands of videos

ReplyDeletePLEASE make it possible to RIGHT CLICK on videos in peoples channels (i.e. vids, favorites etc.) so you can OPEN THEM IN A NEW WINDOW/TAB. Right now it's somekind of javascript, which doesn't let you open links in a new tab. This is a major user interface flaw if you ask me...

I like how the Favorites and the videos used to be on teh same page. Now there is a separate link for them, and i really hate that. overall i like the old channel design better. please leave that OPITIONAL like how myspace did.

ReplyDelete1.) At the top of the channel there are "tabs": All, Uploads, Favorites and so on. I would like to see "Uploads" changed to "Videos", "My Videos", or something similar.
2.) On the right side of the channel, under uploads, the video thumbnails needs to be larger.
3.) The current/old YouTube channel is in need of redesign. Please make it more modern looking than this beta version. I would like to see a sleek look to the channels.
4.) Themes and Colors: rather than a solid color theme, please make themes with various designs.
5.) I am not sure that I like my profile information at the bottom of my channel.
6.) The profile picture at the top of my channel is too small. Make it larger.
7.) The videos under "uploads" are vertically off-center.
I tried out the beta and I just don't like it.

Also, if you're going to make it so that people can watch all of your videos from your channel page, then make the channel page just as interactive as the watch page. Allow viewers to rate, comment, share, embed, etc. all from the users channel page. Otherwise, just make videos link to their watch page instead of playing in the channel window.

ReplyDeleteI like this new version. I see some people saying they don't like it. Well, just because people don't like it doesn't mean you have to not do it. You should put a popup that asks you ONCE ifd you want the new one, and you can switch somewhere by looking it up in help.
