ReplyDeleteHah, it's becoming more difficult to point out issues with the beta layout. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm noticing that the default video on my channel does not show its annotations. At first, I thought that it was because the annotation started at 0:00, so I bumped it up a second (to appear at 0:01), and it still wouldn't show up. However, viewing a video from the channel's list of videos displays annotations fine, as does viewing the default video from its actual video page.
I'm also noticing that some video ratings on channel pages are different from their ratings on the actual video page. For instance, my lowest-rated video has 3 stars over five ratings on the video page, but on the channel page, it's at 2 stars over five ratings.
The "infinite loading circle" thingy when scrolling down my list of playlist videos has continued to be a random occurence, but it's good to see that you all are working out that bug.
Other than that, I haven't found any major bugs with the latest beta channel updates. The only other features I can think of (some of which you have noted to be working on), are:
- The option to let the featured content set for a channel to be a list of all playlists, as opposed to only one select playlist.
- Further sorting controls for videos, such as allowing users to select nine or so hand-picked videos for display on their channel, or allowing the list of playlists to be displayed in something other than chronological order.
- A full screen option for viewing videos on a user's channel, either on the video player, or on some place near the player.
- Randomizing the list of subscribers, friends, and subscriptions on a user's channel page upon each new page view. At the moment, the same people are displayed at all times on the lists.
Again, thanks for all of the hard work placed into these updates to the beta channel layout. The new layouts, when worked with, definitely have more charm than the older layouts. I'll be sure to comment again if there are any more issues that pop up with the layout.

ReplyDeletethe URL Auto-link feature would be nice not only for the video description (which by the way, thanks for working on, however the formatting is gone, it's all just one big block of text) but for the channel page in general, this is a problem not only for the current beta users, but also appears to be a problem on the old style page as well.
ReplyDeleteA feature I'd like to personally see is sorting options for friends/subscribers, if nothing else what Chris suggested with the randomization would be nicer than having the same 8-12 people show up every time someone visits the page. It would be even nicer if non-partners could have the option to feature subscribers by simply sorting their favorites to the top of the list, similar to MySpace's "top 8"

ReplyDeleteHowever, there is a problem I'm having, whether this problem is just because of something I'm doing wrong, or if it is a bug, or something that has not been made yet, I'm not sure.
When I try to upload a picture for the backround on my YouTube page, only the top of the picture and the bottom can be seen. The rest is hidden behind 'wrapper color'. Any thoughts there?
Also, I had a suggestion. It would be really cool to be able to make custom colors for all the different places where colors are chosen.

Some channels have there featured video auto-play, but I don't see that option. Also, are there more modules coming? Because I see some people with lists of best channels and stuff like banners with links to their websites.

I am unable to add a playlist that I created into the "Playlists" tab of the channel. I went to the edit link next to the player/grid view, checked the playlist then hit "Save Changes" but nothing happens after that. Can you please look into this?

Katie - thanks for the feedback but not sure I follow - did you set it to "repeat background"? Otherwise if your background is too small you won't be able to see too much of it (it'll be hidden behind the player).
Lite - Transparency messed with the player before in some cases & browsers. We'll see what we can do.

ReplyDeleteabout transparency, if it messes up with some, why dont you just get rid of the background in the boxes, just let he boxes right on the background with maybe a 2px frame around it, but not a plain color(like transparent would be an option instead of 0x00ff00 for example in the customize)
also, i really think the basic chanel info (name, subs, views) should be at the to right beside (on the left of) the featured video, so many people don't even scroll down on the pages they won't have any info(or let us put a box full width on top of the player with like slogan/short description
also, total number of video from channel watced(as in the account page) should really be available on the channel page)

ReplyDeletewhen you remove the video module and add it back, it places it at the very bottom, right column and there is no arrows on it to move it, so you need to delete all modules and restart fresh, kind of weird behavior
ReplyDeleteif you remove alll, the channel info is still there, but the video get shrinked to a right column size, lacking the thumbnails, but this time the video has a up arrow on it, which does nothing, it also messes the text (favorite, share, etc) underneath the video
i really messed up my page now, i can't get the video at the top alone in ANY way lol, but upon refresh, the video is atop again, really weird behavior

the chanel title field is way too short, same for the tags field
and again, the white bar at the top is TOO HUGE, it should be like a tab, not a whole big thing(and an option to hide the edit buttons on your page too, takes a lot or of real estate(and most of the time if i show my page to someone, i'll be logged in)
also a way to resize various boxes would help so you can have a clean bottom of page(the "wrapper" color is just plain ugly, i tought it was just borders, but its like a big rectangle that continues below the boxes if a column is longer than the other one)
and the background of the added to favorites and share is white by default, which looks pretty ugly with green text on black background (the text stays green, unreadable)

I wanted to change my profile picture but when the window pops up when you want to change your profile picture, I browse for what picture I want and then I click on it and then in the preview it still shows the old picture, and when I press save, the profile picture stays the same! I have waited over 1 full day and it still hasn't updated. I have tried clearing my cache and cookies, and history. IT IS ANNOYING! I have always had trouble with the profile picture uploader. PLEASE FIX IT!

it was just brought to my attention that you can't see the videos at all when viewing from a iphone, where on the old one it did work(i'm assuming it used to be thumbs you could click to open the vid in the youtube app) now the video area is just empty.

some your "OUR FAVORITE NEW CHANNEL DESIGNS" aren't using the Beta Channels anymore. You may want to update as it makes it seem as if even the best designers aren't happy with the new direction.

excelent, but I think theres a bug when I try to edit my channel, I can´t make that a new playlist show on my channel, and when I try to delete something like the Subscribers tab, I can´t put that again. So, I can quit but not create new things, I think its a bug or something, because that problem was today, just 1 day from the new update, maybe, "are you fixing it?" ReplyDeleteThe screen set to 960px is fine. This is due to the fact that the majority of users have a screen resolution of 1280 X 800 or even 1024 x 768 (information going by Google Analytics). The web isn't quite ready for the big pixel resolutions, such as a 1920 x 1080 screen, which is BlueRay Definition.
at least offer an option to change it, 960 is really tiny even on my lousy 1440x900 screen (which is like the default laptop resolution)

ReplyDeleteHi! I'd like to report that I'm unable to make my playlists feature on my channel. When I go to 'edit' button on the bar where the name of the profile stands, and choose which playlists to show, nothing happens.

When you are watching a video on the new beta channel where it says info it shows a heart and it shows a heart next to favorite the video. I think the info and the favorite shouldn't have the same icon. Please change the info icon to like a icon of an "I" THANK YOU!

ReplyDeleteI just have few problems with the new channel design...
1) Transparency option- If you could put this on the old channel, this should be a standard option! I don't see why this wasn't an option on the release of the beta channels...
2) Videos- The scrolling bar is a cool concept, yet it makes it harder to access videos especially for users with LOTS of videos e.g. machinima which has 3,268 videos! Can you imagine trying to find videos with the scroll bar on that channel?
-a solution would be to bring back the 'search' option to find videos within the channel... Still, I prefer the "old" layout for videos. It was simple, quick, and easy.
3) When editing, I would love to have COMPLETE flexibility by being able to move modules between the two "boxes"
4) Vlog- Has this option disappeared?
Don't get me wrong, I like the new channel- the pros outnumber the cons.

ReplyDeleteSince this is a blog to communicate with beta users, I’m just gonna put out some ideas/options for future YouTube channel designs…
I use a website called www.ning.com. On Ning, you can create your own blog/website for free. They have some cool options that YouTube channels don’t have, that I think YouTube users should have.
1) Audio- Having music playing in the background on your channel. To avoid copyright violations, YouTube could have a specific playlist to choose from...and if people don't like the selection they could donate money to YouTube for a specific song.
2) YouTube Apps- Being able to put applications on your channel such as mini-games, etc. This would be kinda like the Google toolbar applications.
3) Background customization- A tool that would allow you to customize your background on YouTube sort of like the program paint.
Again, these are just some ideas that probably won’t happen, but I thought it would be cool if YouTube would take some of these into consideration for future channels.
Although, I do think there should be a new option that YouTube brings out in the nearby future like they did with the vlog.

I like your work very much but i had to come back to my old channel. Cause rating and commenting videos when looking at them is a very very useful feature. So i felt a little bit frustrated with the new beta. But i know you guys that soon or later, you will find a solution. And when that will happen, i will switch definitly to the new beta!!!

Yeahh thsi has been an error for about a few months. Like I had one screen still on my old channel version and another tab that i just chose beta. While editing in the old screen I like tried to change the featured video URL. Then my whole video log went POOF!

I agree with what "cobaye" said. In my opinion, having a huge chunk of the wrapper showing at the bottom makes a person's channel look very unattractive.

ReplyDeleteIn the last few days (beginning of June 09) it has become impossible to edit the playlist view.
ReplyDeleteWe have created two new playlists and uploaded several clips to these.
The clips appear in the recent activity box and play correctly. The playlists are set correctly, yet when we check the box to make them visible and save changes nothing happen and the playlists aren't added to the playlist box.
The grid list doesn't work either.
We have tried to delete and recreate them but it didn't work. We tried to edit on different computers and different browsers but it hasn't made a difference.
Is this a known bug being fixed?

Following on previous message, none of the options in the edit box including:

seem to be active, it appears as if one can make changes, but the 'save changes' has no effect.
We have just discovered another new bug.
ReplyDeleteIn one of our playlists we have 17 movies, when that playlist is selected and displayed in the side column view the first 12 movie thumbnails and info are displayed, the space for the last five is empty and the spinning progress icon stays there permanently, the five remaining videos never appear.
To be noted that if I go to 'my videos' I can see, edit and play these clips, which indicated there is nothing wrong with the actual video or the information attached to it.

On my page, when I try to edit my tags, I try and type but then a lot of my tags dissapear-and so I cannot do anything except erase part of my tags. Also, it seems that the scroll bar on my comments part of my page has dissapeared, so now when someone comments my comment box gets larger, and the bottom part of my background gets cut off. Besides those little problems, everything has been great so far!!! :D

the links in the description still don't autolink (and neither the cahnnel description), which is annoying as i link to the mp3 of every video in the description as i don't (yet) have a real store on itunes to have the nice itunes link
also, the formating on the description is horrible, especially when there NNED to be line breaks and there are none, also that is pretty critical to have a way to link just to the uploaded videos like we could before, cause now those links just redirect to the main channel page with an error message and there is no way to just send a list of videos without having the whole page+ autoplay video load and start

1.) I don't like the blue border that surrounds my list of videos. Get rid of that. It is unnecessary.
2.) I don't like the new buttons that is used to move the modules. I prefer the circle shaped buttons.
Please make the profile picture at the top of the channel larger. For people who have text as part of the profile picture, you can't read it. Make it about the same size as the profile picture that appears in the user's profile information box.

ReplyDelete1.) Add the HQ and HD buttons to the featured video player.
2.) Please add the ability to delete user created themes and colors.
3.) Skins: in addition to solid colors, I would like the ability to choose skins/themes to my channel. This would make a channel look more attractive.
4.) Some people want their profile information at the top of the page. This would not look right if a verticle profile box is placed at the top. I suggest a horizontal profile information box at the top of the page. This can be placed above the featured video but under the module that shows the username/suscribe button.
5.) Do not bring back the director, music, etc. accounts label. This is redundant. I changed my account from regular to director a long time ago but there is really no difference and benefit to having a director's account.

ReplyDeleteI would like to say that the way users select the featured videos is now perfect or almost perfect. It is exactly the way I imagined it. It has a pulldown box to select the user's own videos but also that "other" as an option. When this is selected, the user can enter a video URL.
The only thing I would recommend would be to have the ability to not feature a video.
Also, I would like to be able to make someone's video a featured video from the watch page. For example, if I am watching a video, if I am signed in, I would like to be able to click a button that says "make featured" or something similar to this.
Okay here is all I got now that so much has been improved, by the way good job with user thumbnails. But I think the user should be able to decide the size of some of the thumbnails on our channels. In a way like our ability to change our video box to grid view and compact view. We should have the choice to make 3 or 4 large thumbnails showing in the "friends" or "subscribers" boxes or 16 tiny thumbnails. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteThere is a bug in the channel description in Internet explorer. If you compare the channel description viewed in Internet Explorer and Google Chrome it looks weird in Internet Explorer. First of all, the part in the channel description where it says website, it is all scooted over to the right side and bunched up on 2 lines, where as in Google Chrome it is on 1 line.
And in the about me section as well as the influences, movies and everything else below about me, the first line is to the right of where it says about me(and names for other sections) and the rest is underneath. But in Google Chrome it is all underneath.

After the problems pointed out yesterday about the edit features not working, not updating (which content would you like to display, featured content set and which of your playlists would you like to display?)and only the first 12 video in a playlist displaying (the others being replaced by the spinning lodain icon) today the links to 'playlists' and 'uploads' don't work. Only the preferred playlist is displayed and there is no way to get to the others.

1) I now notice that the way playlists designate which is latest changes according to the setting. My channel will now display the last video listed in my playlist as the last. That makes sense but that's not how playlists have normally work and that's not how a playlists embed code, as provided by google, displays them. When I embed my playlist it begins at the beginning of the playlist (which is in fact the oldest video). So, in order to get around that, I would move videos at the end of my playlist to the beginning each time I added one. Now, I'm not sure what to do.
My playlist embed players start at the first video while youtube channels start at the last video. That makes it difficult to consistently showcase videos from newest to oldest, which is my preference.
Can YouTube Channels have an option to feature the first video OR the last video in a playlist?

ReplyDelete[1] The 'Subscriptions' and 'Subscribers' windows have a reduced icon size from before. That's alright I guess (there doesn't seem to be an option to change the size of these icons yet...). But, now that I try to put them in rows of 1, 2 or 3, there are always 2 left dangling over. (This is if they are aligned to the right side; doesn't seem to be a problem if they are aligned to the left)
For example, one row should only display 8 users, but currently it'll chop off two users and add them to a new row, making it essentially 1 row of 6 and another row underneath of 2. This seems to happen for both the '2' & '3' row options. Likely a bug.
[2] Unrelated, but the subscriber glitch bug still exists. I've got several subscribers that appear twice in my 'subscribers' list, artificially bumping the number higher than what it truly is.
[3] I think that there should be the option, for partners, to display a "Partner" button, or something to that effect. It's like a status symbol that they should be worthy of, IMO.
The top bar is looking pretty sweet; I see that you've even put in a Search option: great stuff! Hats off to you! I'm not completely sure I follow the logic of transparency being difficult, however. Aaaaaanyway, once a few of these niggly bugs are out, this thing is definitely good to go! Thanks for your hard work, guys!

I manage youtube.com/umn and have two major issue with the new channel design:
ReplyDelete1. the way in which content is displayed below the fold of the page is really unattractive. It doesn't fill properly so it is all left aligned, but it is as if there is something missing on the right half. The subscribers are all the way on the bottom, and I don't think it outlines the available playlists very well.
2. Where is my background? It doesn't load our patterned background and reverts to a standard solid color.
I'm really loving all the updates, and it's getting to the point where I can't find anything wrong anymore.
ReplyDeleteOnly thing that I've seen go wrong was one time, I clicked to watch a favorite video, it showed up, but with the title and info of my featured video. May have just been a random fluke, as it hasn't done it again.
One suggestion though, if it's possible. I'd like to see the friends and subscribers be randomized, rather than seeing the same people every time. Just a thought.

ReplyDeleteI made it in photoshop, and exported it as a jpeg at a really low quality. The original size was nearly 1MB, so it took a good bit of compression to get it to fit.

ReplyDeleteI've never used the transparency feature on the old channel because it would also make everything, such as video thumbnails, transparent. Therefore it would be difficult to see what's on the page.

Also, I'd like to see more frequent updates on this blog. Even when you make minor changes such as adding a search option, changing the move module buttions from circle to square, etc. Don't wait several week to post a new blog. I think you should make a blog once a week.
BTW, i can't seem to upload any video since the last maintenance, always give me the monkey error(with the 3 pages of random garbage) and the video stays in processing for (14 hours) now, is this due to the beta in some way?
ReplyDeleteI love the changes you have made except one. I was one of those who actually liked the fact that the comments was in a scrollbar and not really that happy that it was changed back to how it was before.
ReplyDeleteON ANOTHER NOTE. Something that I've been talking about before. On my channel when I click "Playlists" I only see the three newest but not any more than that. Why can't people see all the playlists that the user has? Also, the "play all" option on the playlists isn't there. When a person ask's me where to go to see my other playlists I usually don't want them to tell them do this and do that and then this and that. It would be so much better if when the clicked "Playlists" on my channel they saw all the playlists that I have and also a "play all" option.
Another thing that bugs the crap out of me is the very very very tiny box that we get to write in when we want to write in the information box. I like to see more than two rows at a time.
The search addition is very cool! It's like, almost perfect. I LOVE IT!!

ReplyDeleteFirst, thanks and congratulations on providing a new YouTube experience. As far, I like the direction where new Channels are going.
Now, my issues:
What happened to vlog? Will it come back as an option? Since it should (please), it'd have to be selectable as featured video.
I love the way Favorites are displayed now (at a separate section, all of them at once), and I haven't suffered the "infinite circle" problem. Oddly enough, my Favorites often play automatically, in order. Nice, but I didn't choose that - it'd be great to have that option and, also, to play them randomly (which, actually, should be optional to all kind of sets: playlists, Favorites, Uploads -change the name, please-, etc.
Since there's no vlog, I've tried to select a featured video other than the latest I've favorited, specifically, the latest from the playlist I was using as Vlog (Arte), but it doesn't update after I save those changes.
On the same topic, the playlists I choose to (dis)play on its own section shouldn't be related to what video I feature.
Finally, what are the requisites for Beta Channels? Videos aren't being played correctly (they don't play as smoothly as before, though they sound just fine, maybe better than ever); I guess it's because this computer isn't up to the task (which is not your fault), but it was up to old version.
And add me as an user waiting for transparency.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Devon and I run the youtube channel MacManiaTutorials. I tried to switch over the the youtube beta channel on April 16 in apple's Safari, but it wouldn't let me. I kept clicking it but it wouldn't work. Then, a few days later after clicking it countless times, I finally got into the channel beta. I played around with it but it wasn't right for me. I tried switching back to the original layout, but it kept reloading the page and directing me to click lets go. About 1-2 weeks ago after trying to switch back for a month, it finally let me switch back. I had my original channel, and i didn't like the channel design, so I went to go update the color scheme. Now whenever I try to edit my channel in anyway, Youtube always gives me the 500 internal server error. I can't edit my channel design, channel info, or upload a background. If you have the time, can you reset my channel to function like normal? I would really appreciate it.

ReplyDeletethere is an issue with the channels' display on firefox: the friends' box, for example, is displaying four rows when set to display three. one icon from each row is pushed to a fourth row (which just includes the three extra icons"). The channels look asymmetrical and ugly because of this. Please fix this issue!!

Without the transparency option, what use is the background image?.
ReplyDeleteReally like how the old page layout looks, as far making the page look uniquely your own.
There are many You Tube sites that focus on Playlists and favorites.
This new Beta removes this focus for a single featured video.
I think the One huge square table with little separation, limited & tiny thumbs looks boring and very old school.
The new layout reminds me of Catholic school where everyone has to look the same :( sorry
With the new channels, the "organize videos" feature doesn't work. You can change those 9 videos or favorites you want to show but when you click on "Update channel" it is as before. I hope you understand what I say...

I find this new type of channel really cool, but there is (unfortunately) a miss.. the trasparency!! Is the thing that make my channel cool!! So please, try to add this feature because I really think that the channel 2.0 is cool!
ReplyDeleteI would like to be able to order how my lists appear on the page-- such as moving my favorites below my playlists, etc. Being able to have a "top 9" videos like before would be nice too.
ReplyDeleteI also would like friends and subscribers to be randomized each time the channel page loads, or at least an option to pick "top friends" or "top subscribers" that can show on the channel page.
Overall, I like the beta design! It has a lot of potential! :-)
